Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
