Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
