TikTok Provides The Community Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Their Feeds

The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the company disclosed that it now features over 1 billion content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a widespread launch. This development aligns with a rise in AI content, driven by new AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing content creators on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A large amount of this output is classified as low-quality AI content, a phrase for inferior, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own choices,” said a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The service shared that there are currently over a billion videos on its service identified as AI-generated. Overall, more than 100 million media items are submitted to the service daily, making clips made by AI a limited percentage of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Viewers will be capable of limit or boost the amount of artificial media they view by accessing the “manage topic” feature in the app and picking AI-made media. Other topics that can already be adjusted under the tool cover current affairs, style, beauty, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s guidelines require content makers to tag lifelike AI-generated content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of celebrities or critical incidents. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.

Additionally, the app will from now on add an AI-generated watermark to content produced via its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying artificial media. This action is aimed to stop users from trying to evade the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also establishing a two million dollar awareness program for experts and institutions to create learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will support educational bodies specializing in teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

TikTok has defended its safety measures, during debate over plans to lay off a large number of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is expected to reduce 439 jobs in its trust and safety team in London, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can shield workers by removing the most distressing content ahead of it is viewed by humans. The platform stated a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content seen by safety staff over the past year due to the use of its AI tools.

It is vital to integrate people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
