From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric

Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.

Questions Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.

“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release

But, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.

The release—originating from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.

But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative voices to launch the offensive.

“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Clinton Campaign Issues Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.

Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted

Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of materials that contained no new data.
