A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
